Preventive maintenance for offset presses: a practical checklist
Daily, weekly and periodic checks that reduce downtime, waste and emergency call-outs on a sheetfed offset press.
An offset press running every day wears in predictable places: rollers, grippers, dampening units, vacuum and lubrication. Almost every “sudden” breakdown gives warning signs weeks in advance. Preventive maintenance is about reading them early, while the fix is cheap and can be planned.
Every day, at the end of the shift
- Clean blankets, cylinders and inking rollers with the products recommended by the manufacturer.
- Visually check oil levels and the central lubrication circuits.
- Check the fountain solution: temperature, conductivity and pH against the reference values.
- Remove paper dust and anti-set-off powder from feeder, delivery and sensors.
- Note unusual noises, vibrations or alarms: this is the most valuable information for the technician.
Every week
- Deep-clean the dampening unit and filters.
- Check roller pressure and settings (contact stripes).
- Inspect grippers and lays: wear, dirt, adjustments.
- Check vacuum pumps, hoses and suction filters.
Every month or by running hours
- Grease the points listed in the manufacturer’s maintenance plan.
- Check belts, chains and couplings.
- Test safety systems and emergency stops.
- Check register and printing pressure with a test sheet.
When you need a technician
Some jobs need specific skills and tools: roller setting across the press, bearing replacement, gripper and transfer adjustment, electronic diagnostics. Planning them during a quiet period costs far less than suffering them in the middle of production.
With REPANOW you can open a planned-maintenance request, choose a technician who specialises in your brand and receive a PDF service report that stays in the machine history.
